Cheltenham was aptly rebranded as The Festival Town in 2019. The town hosts more than 25 annual Festivals, perhaps the best known being the Literature, Science and Music Festivals. Mention Cheltenham and many people will immediately think of the national hunt horse racing festival in March. Cheltenham itself has a League One football team that entertain sides like Bolton, Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday. An exciting FA Cup run saw them play Manchester City in 2021. Up the road in Gloucester, there is the world renowned “Cherry and Whites” at their Kingsholm Rugby Ground (which hosted Rugby World Cup matches in 2015). Each summer Cheltenham College plays host to the world’s longest running Cricket Festival where you can watch top level County Cricket in an iconic setting. There this of course Cheltenham Racecourse which hosts race meetings from October to April and perhaps the less well known Cirencester Park where you can watch international standard polo (and maybe even spot a member of the Royal Family competing).
If participating in sport is what you are looking for then Cheltenham is well served. You have swimming pools at Cheltenham Leisure Centre and the outdoor pool at Sandford Lido. For tennis there is East Glos Tennis Club (where you can also play squash or paddle tennis), there are are also public courts in Montpellier and Pittville Parks. For golfers there is Lilleybrook, Cleeve Hill, Cotswold Hills or Brickhampton Golf course all within easy driving distance. There is also a pitch and putt course in Pittville Park. Cheltenham also has its own Croquet Club and three lawn bowls clubs (one just off the High Street a short walk from Honeybourne Gate).
